NEW MONTEREY, Monterey County — October 28, 2026. A small historic building on Cannery Row will be the focus of a guided visit on Sunday, November 1, from 4 to 5 p.m. The Monterey Public Library and Museums calendar lists an evening tour of Pacific Biological Laboratories (PBL), 800 Cannery Row, as part of Cannery Row Days.
What makes the laboratory important?
The museum’s event page explains how the building was associated with marine biologist Ed Ricketts, whose research and personal friendship with writer John Steinbeck became a distinctive part of the area’s history. The site also preserves stories of the circle of friends and later PBL Members who helped save the building and were associated with the origins of the Monterey Jazz Festival.
What should visitors expect?
Docents are expected to explain the building’s historical role and its connections to marine science, literature and local cultural life. The city notes that the interpretation may be most suitable for children age 10 and older. This is a small historical facility rather than a contemporary working aquarium; participants should follow staff directions and respect any restrictions on access to rooms or artifacts.
Is registration necessary?
Yes. The official event listing requires registration and says spaces are limited. The event form contains an automated instruction referring to an online event link while simultaneously identifying the physical laboratory address; visitors should confirm the tour’s in-person access details with Monterey Museums after registering, rather than assume the automated wording accurately describes a virtual-only visit.
Parking and accessibility
The museum advises that parking is limited along Cannery Row and recommends using the city’s interactive parking map. For accessibility accommodations, it asks for requests at least 72 hours in advance, when possible, and lists the Museums Office at (831) 646-5648. Individual accommodations and space availability should be confirmed directly.
